Hoe werkt het?

Hypoxie is het gevolg van de verlaging van de luchtdruk, die de partiële zuurstofdruk verlaagt, waardoor de overdracht van zuurstof door het membraan van de longen en dus in het bloed wordt verminderd. 

Bij inademing van de lage hoeveelheid zuurstof die beschikbaar is reageren de hersenen door het lichaam te vragen de longventilatie te verhogen en de productie van rode bloedcellen aan te maken. Het zijn deze die zuurstof naar de weefsels transporteren, inclusief de spieren.

Als reactie op hypoxie gaat het lichaam dus extra rode bloedcellen aanmaken, die nadien in normale omstandigheden extra zuurstof kunnen transporteren doorheen het lichaam.
